Atascocita is a small, well-established unincorporated community with over 15 neighborhoods. The good schools, friendly people, and natural beauty of this area are the qualities that make Atascocita one of the fastest growing communities in the Houston region. Atascocita is located on Lake Houston, a 12,000-acre, man-made lake offering great fishing, boating and jet skiing. The population of Atascocita is approximately 32,575 people.
Education
Atascocita children attend the Humble Independent School Districts schools. Fourteen of Humble ISD’s schools have earned the Texas Education Agency’s highest rating of Exemplary, while seven campuses are rated Recognized, and seven campuses are rated Acceptable. The district has no low performing schools. More than 90 percent of Humble ISD’s students continue their education after graduation, and Humble ISD’s average SAT and ACT scores exceed state and national averages.Nearby Kingwood is also home to Kingwood Community College with an enrollment of approximately 6,000 students.
Location
Atascocita is located in Harris County, in the southeastern portion of Texas. Atascocita is 6 miles east of Humble, Texas. It is approximately 52 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and approximately 75 miles east to the Louisiana border.Atascocita is conveniently located 20 miles from Houston, 52 miles from Galveston and the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, and 154 miles from Austin, Texas. Dallas is 215 miles away and San Antonio is 203 miles from Atascocita.It is only ten minutes from Atascocita to Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston’s primary airport and world headquarters of Continental Airlines.
Geography/Terrain
Northeast Harris County is largely forested. Atascocita is an area rich with natural resources including Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River. The total land area is 27.6 square miles.Lake Houston is an artificial lake that is the primary water supply for the city of Houston and much of the surrounding area. The lake is spanned by an earthen bridge containing the traffic of FM 1960. The San Jacinto River is the lake’s major tributary.

Atascocita offers easy access to Humble’s beautiful Deerbrook Mall. Deerbrook Mall, which opened in 1983, has recently updated and remodeled, offering local residents 140 shops.
The greater Houston area offers an endless array of activities including the many outstanding museums in the Museum District, the Kemah Boardwalk, and Space Center Houston at NASA. Interesting Facts
The Jesse H. Jones Park is home to authentic reproductions of an 1830s homestead, called Redbud Hill Homestead, and an Akokisa Indian Village.The Humble Museum was established in 1976 as a Bicentennial Project. The museum features historical displays dating back to the old oil field days of 1903 and 1904.
Atascocita purports to be the Fast Food Capital of Texas due to the many fast food restaurants in the community. Atascocita (Spanish for “obstruction”) was once a stronghold owned by the Spanish government used against the French.
Construction in the Atascocita area began in the 1970s, and the community was named after the historic Atascosito Road that followed the route of present-day FM 1960.
